Extra credit Questions about the course

1. I enjoyed the assignment where we had to make our own art exhibit because it was interesting to put together a bunch of artwork that went together and just the thought process of how to do it. It took a little bit, but its a project I felt comfortable doing.

2. I didn't like the color wheel assignment. I don't really enjoy working with paint and there was just too many ways that I kept screwing up.

3. Blackboard was pretty easy since I use it with other online classes and in class classes.

4. I thought the discussion groups was fine. I liked the blogs, but having a module that we had to do a blog and discussion made me forget about the discussion because I submitted something and would think I'm done. Of course this is my own fault but it would just slip my mind.

7. I would recommend it, but I would also let them know that there is a bit of work you have to do so if they were willing to put a good amount of effort into it then they should take it.

8. I would recommend that you have everything due on a Sunday instead of Saturdays. I know that's what you started doing at the end, but when it was due on a Saturday I felt a little overwhelmed because during the week i try to work on as much as I can but with having other classes it was a little difficult to balance. Sundays are always nice to just stay at home and finish homework.

1. I was expecting to learn a little more than the basics and the meaning of art pieces. Yes they were met and I was highly satisfied.

2. I feel like art is a way for someone to express not only their feelings but what goes on in their mind and to show people what their talents are. I originally defined it as just how people express themselves.

3. My first artist that was my favorite was Picasso and now my favorite is Michelangelo. I think this is because his art interested me the most over Picasso. In Michelangelo's work there's a lot going on but at the same time it says so many things to the viewers. Its kinda like there's a story going on in it. 

4. I've taken a lot of other online course so this wasn't really any different, but I enjoyed it.

I picked those pieces because the first two just seemed so innocent. And the last one i picked was just because it was weird looking and I thought it was funny to look at.

Reflection for project 4

In my exhibit I wanted to give my viewers a variety of views from an amusement park, but also give them a diverse set of artworks. Between oil canvas to watercolors, and even photographs. I got the idea of amusement parks by deciding what kind of mood i wanted in my gallery and decided on happy and playful. The first thing that popped into my head was amusement parks. They are filled with happy memories with friends and family with good food. In my exhibit i would want lots of space to spread out my artwork and have the walls be white and a light grey. I think those colors would make the artwork stand out the best.

Video 1 The lowdown on the lowbrow

1. A lowbrow is a person regarded as uncultivated and lacking in taste. Initialized in pictures with naked girls in them. A lot of people don't like it. Those who don't like it are those who create art that's considered it and those who like it are those who use the term to describe others work. Some refer to it as a lifestyle with a common experience who want to add to it. A lot of the artists who's artwork is considered to be lowbrow get their ideas from other lowbrow artists.
2. In a way yes this video helps with the making of the art exhibit project because there's a theme in the video and its lowbrow work. All the artworks are different, but at the same time they're the same. They all are described and looked at by other artists as lowbrow work.
3.The video kinda helps in the concept of theme.

Video 2 Tate Modern

1. The tate modern is in Berlin. Its a railway station and also the most visited art museum in the world. They get size from it. live performances happen here and its kinda like a theme park.  Modern art is at the tate. High class art is kinda intimidating when everything around it as well is high class. The new tate is new art with a new look that was for everyone.
2. The video kinda helped with making the power point, but only in the aspect to not make the scene and the art so high class because it doesn't make everyone feel comfortable and feel like they can relate or fit in.
3.The video let me have an understanding of how art can make people feel from what is in the art gallery to how its put together to even how the staff is acting. All important to understand when having an art museum.

Video 3 An Acquiring Mind

1. A museum is never finished, new things always need to be added.Philippe de Montebello is the director Emertius. He was born in France. He turned the Metro into a European art museum. He added great quality to the metro with a diverse culture of art. Even if he didn't like some artwork by some artist he would still work to get the piece if he thought the work would benefit in the metro. Philippe says that knowledge is what makes a museum work.
2. This was a very helpful video when making my project because it showed me that it's okay to have a variety of art pieces, but at the same time to group them together so there's a theme in each section.
3. This video gave me an understanding of how a museum needs to be ran and that no museum should ever be done with their art pieces. If a museum wants to grow they need to get newer and different art work every so often.

Video review module 12

1. I selected Abstract Expressionism and Pop art of the 50's and 60's just to learn the background and meaning of abstract and I chose Andy Warhol because I've heard of him before and knew he was famous but didnt know much more than that.

2. For the abstract expressionism video i learned that color is a huge factor in an abstract work of art. When you look more carefully there's more to an abstract painting than what you see from a far. plain colors from a far have more of a meaning and definition up close. Emotions are behind color and makes the viewers feel what the artist feels. Each line on a painting is all based on experimenting from the artist which is why the artwork is so original and different from the next. Also how you use the brush with these colors plays a huge roll as well with how the painting comes together. In the Andy Warhol video i learned he cut things out of objects and enlarged them and made them to his own. I learned that he used silk screen on a picture of marilyn monroe and printed tons of series of them. He started simple and grew from there. Andy loved to make his artwork on famous people. I noticed he loved to make his artwork on huge sheets instead of something small. 

3. These videos relate to the reading by over viewing about the two topics, but the video went more into depth and detail. It gave me a more of an understanding with abstract and the artwork of any warhol. 

4. I enjoyed the films for the most part. Some parts were boring, but others were interesting. I liked watching the Andy Warhol video and seeing the pictures he did with Marilyn Monroe and the different versions he created of the same picture.

Formal Analysis: Obvious its to see he used some sort of paints with dyed rubber. Doesn't look like there was much of a process other than having a base color and then another coat of a different color with a little design to it.

Bracketing: The only thing I really see in this piece is a sort of white brick wall. 

Interpretation: I dont really think he was trying to say anything, just kind of trying things out and putting them together with whatever came off the top of his head.

Interpretation: Because there isn't much going on in this piece its kinda hard what he's trying to say but maybe he was going for the viewers to feel a sense of calmness and relaxed.

Formal Analysis: Drummer had each panel stretched and dyed rubber. He uses the paint colors black, purple, and gold with different designs in each panel. he uses different brush strokes going in all different directions creating different shapes and designs.

Bracketing: I see the obvious designs of squares, lines, and rectangles. It's hard to tell but in the top left panel it kinda looks like Drummer was trying to paint a letter. 

Interpretation: I think the artist was just going off the top of his head and to let the views mind wander and make things up themselves.

1. I picked the videos Expressionism, and Dada and Surrealism because I wanted to learn more about what vibes paintings give off and how they do so. I wanted to learn more about different forms of art and its effect on the viewers outlook on certain pieces. 

2. Expression is used in many forms in a painting. Things like someones eyes can reveal certain feeling, or coloring like black white and red, meaning sorrow innocence and passion. In an artwork called nude with a cat a artist used globs of paint to exaggerate the mood. Color is a huge part of expressing emotion. Colors have the effect to make people feel a certain way and is just another way to express the artwork and what vibe it gives off. In the video Dada and Surrealism I learned that artwork comes together with choices, like where to place an object or how to place it. When you let your mind go and just go with your creative flow, your art piece will come together how its suppose to. Schwitters’ artwork showed us that when you look up close to a piece of work that you are able to see the transformation of it all, but when you stand back and look at the whole piece you can see it as a whole and the artwork will look in a way "different".

3.The videos relate to the reading by telling us exactly what Expressionism Dada and Surrealism is and giving us wordy details about them. The videos are able to give us less detail and more examples to relate to what exactly is being described. To be able to see what colors in a painting does to the viewers opinion on the painting is easier to understand and relate than just reading about it. 

4. Although the films were kinda blah, they were helpful being able to connect the details in reading to the actual meaning of what was being described. I liked being able to see multiple paintings and art works and connect them. Also while being shown the artwork, it was helpful to know what exactly was going on and how the artwork was created. Knowing the thought process of each artwork makes it ten times easier to understand whats going on and why it was done.

 1. I selected Buddhism and African art just because I've learned a little bit about Buddhism in an art class a year ago so i knew a little about it and wanted to know more. I picked African Art because i was curious about what it actually consisted of and how African art was worshiped.

2. Buddhism video talks about Buddha and his beliefs about the world and how he meditated and founded Buddhism. It talked about the temple where Buddha went and how he shared with others that they should go there as well. It was called the Golden Age where people saw the world in their own way in the 8 fold path. "All compounds wear out" was his last teaching before he died and after his death he was looked at as a saint. As for the African art video I learned that that art for them is a part of their daily life between their homes and everyday utensils. it's expressed in the way they dress and hair styles and in traditional rituals.Masks have been used in ceremonies along with music and dance. These art pieces are made of wood and straw but because these deteriorate the piece in museums are only around 200 years old. Some art pieces will be of animals and humans all around the continent.

3. These videos related to the reading based on what is cover about Buddhism and the art in Africa. The book gave a great description of it all but the book was able to put pictures and visuals of everything that was described. 

4. I thought the videos were informative to a certain extent. I enjoyed learning exactly how Buddhism came about and how they worship their religion with art and traditions. I also liked learning how art in Africa is used daily and worshiped daily. Seeing all the different artwork for each religion helped me understand the concepts that were given in the reading.

Mask project

I selected these three pieces because they differ from being simple as the second and third, to as complicated as the first piece. I took little things from all these masks. I took the animal looking mask to decide to do a Bengal, and the second and third ones to do the simplicity of just the basic looks of the Bengal but at the same time having lots of detail that's defined.

For my finished mask the materials i used were simple but the detail i added i made sure were very bold and sharp. I used a black sharpie and orange marker. I made sure to make certain parts of the mask darker to show a shadow to show more detail. I also had used a lifted poster that has Styrofoam in it

Overall I could have used more 3D items, but I wasn't exactly sure what to use in order for the Bengal head to pop out, that's why I mainly focused on making the detail look 3D. I did enjoy making the mask because it was something I've never really done before other than in elementary school but to see the mask that have been made I'm very impressed on how elegant they are.

Module 9 video review

1. I selected these two videos because ever since the PowerPoint project i enjoy learning about Michelangelo and his artwork. Also learning about art and what it represent and the effects it has is intriguing.

2. In the Drawings of Michelangelo it discusses his drawings and how they created how people looked at bodies and let people look deeper at Michelangelo himself. The video gives a background of his life his family and the time periods of his work. His artwork lets viewers see things how he saw them and in a way let them in his brain. His drawings and sculptures focuses on a very realistic and muscular body type.

In the video Power of Art: Caravaggio, Caravaggio never drew a thing. He would eyeball objects then paint and for models he would grab people off the street and bring them into the studio. In a way Caravaggio went against everything that everyone imagined as art and what they saw. Caravaggio started getting noticed as having real talent, but somehow also looked down on.

3. The two videos I picked relate with the readings when talking about each artist, their background, and how their artwork was looked at. Also the chapters talked about the kind of art that was being made in the time period and how each artist had an effect on it and put their own twist to it.

4. I actually really enjoyed these films compared to prior videos we've had to do reviews on. Seeing how Caravaggio only worried about himself and how he wanted to create his artwork was interesting and inspiring. The videos let me see what kinda artwork was being made in that time period more than the book had done.

1. What was it like using your hand as subject matter for a drawing?

Using my hand as the subject was relatively easy. Although I'm not the greatest drawer the details were easy enough to add.

2. What media did you select - pencil or charcoal? Why?

I chose a pencil because I have more experience with it.

3. How did it feel to create a drawing with your non-dominant hand?

 Creating a drawing with my non-dominant hand felt very uncomfortable and in a sense made me feel like I had no control of what was happening        

  

4. Compare and contrast your final drawings. Do you think they are successful studies?

I'm not really sure what you mean by the drawings being a "successful study", but you can definitely tell which drawing was done with my dominant hand and which one was not. Although the non-dominant one isn't great looking, you are still able to tell what exactly the drawing and detail is.

5. Would you consider using your non-dominant hand to create artwork in the future?

I would not consider using my non-dominant hand to create artwork in the future if I wanted the artwork to actually look good.

Video Review Module 8

More Human than Human and The Measure of All Things

More Human than Human

• How most body images created don't look realistic.
• The brains of ancient humans looked at the body a lot different than we do now

3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

Both videos focuses heavily on the human body and how amazing it can be. It analyzes from head to toe. Also talks about human body back then and now and how it was looked at. 

4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?

The two films were interesting in certain ways. I liked learning about how artists look at human bodies and how in depth one must look in order to get a grasp of every curve of the body. The films opened up my mind after the reading, just because its easier for me to catch on with videos than it is with reading.

1. The videos I watched was Prairie Style and Architecture: the Science of Design. In the first video I learned how exactly he opened up a house that seemed so closed in. His work was very horizontal and portioned just right between windows doors and everything outside as well. In the video Architecture: the Science of Design I learned that concrete came from the making of skyscrapers and since its been used it has been improved.

2. In the Architecture video it focused more on technology and human interaction rather than things that go into architecture like concrete but it did a good job intertwining between the book and the video. As far as the Prairie video it really focused on what the book was talking about with the landscape of a house and expanded on things like windows and sizes and shapes of houses and how it all comes together.

3. I really enjoyed the Prairie Style video because of how in depth it went into how houses were built and the reasoning's behind them. I never really thought of how the placement of windows and rooms and shapes of a house could effect the outlook on it as a whole. Wright really went all out when thinking about the location of a house and where the sun rises and sets and where the windows will be because of those factors. 

4. If I'm being honest I mostly picked the videos I did because of the order they were in. Although, afterwards I did go through and watched glimpses of the other videos and I'm glad I picked the ones I did.

When I was looking at the images in the first peers blog it was very clear what the image represented and the principle that was being looked at. The second peers images though were very unique and I enjoyed looking at them. Everything was pretty straight forward and showed exactly what they were trying to show.

None of them were the same as my images, but it was interesting to see which ones everyone picked. It showed different personalities and what each person enjoyed.

My second peer picked some crazy ones for the section he wanted to know more about and I kinda liked them because it just made you think what exactly was going on in the artists head.

5. What do you think about  the process of reading your peers reflection? Do you find this to be a valuable in your learning?

I like the comments but it didn't really teach me anything. All comments are positive so it was nice to see.

1. In the video named Through the Eyes of the Sculptor I learned  that sculptors move away from their homeland to really understand what their culture is all about. Also they must use their emotions to carve these sculptures. They will take out the original carving and use it to carve a duplicate. In some of the marble sculptures there will be different people that work on one carving, for example someone will do the face or hair or body shape. They work together to put together one full sculpture. There's a stone yard where these artists will get their stone from that starts as a canvas and turns into a masterpiece. The artist will be very picky when it comes to the perfect stone and will go to great measures. Sometimes the artist will search for weeks just to get one piece of stone.

2. In this video they showed lots of examples of the methods of carving. Carving being the subtractive process in which one starts with a mass of material larger than the planed sculpture and subtracts, or takes away, material until only the desired for remains. They showed how a sculptor would start of with a large limestone rock and cut it down into a head or body of some sort.

3. This film was very interesting to see how artists would start off with a simple black of stone and be able to sculpt it into a detailed face or body figure. It was interesting to find out that in lots of sculptures, multiple people will work on it in order to have a finished product. It was easier to watch the video and understand the steps in sculpting and all that is involved in the process than the reading.

1.In the second video called Glass and Ceramics it taught me what glass was made of. I never really knew too much about glass and how its made so learning the its made from sand is kind of mind blowing. I learned when making blowing glass its shaped through wet newspaper which i find kind of incredible. Glass is put into fire not only to melt but to also harden when the right shape is made. When making stained glass for a room the artist will look at the lighting in the room which I found interesting because I never thought of the artist thinking of  something like that. Ceramics is made by fire just like glass and made with a clay base. A crystal structure is what gives the ceramics hardness and resistance.

2. The video and the reading relate in one aspect of telling the audience how glass is made, which is from silica or sand. When the video talked about stained glass and what its techniques are used for they both talked about being used for windows and used examples of the stained glass in a church and how putting different cuts of glass with different colors on each are shaped into one piece. When talking about clay and ceramics they both talked about the high temperature clay is put in in order to shape the product and turn it into whatever is desired.

3. I enjoyed this film more than the sculpting film just because i find glass and ceramics to be more interesting in the process of making a piece of art. I never really thought too much into how the stained glass in my church was made, but now learning about it, it gives me a bigger appreciation for it. Also when it comes to ceramics its very interesting how the plates and bowls we use on a daily basis is made with clay and put into an oven and designed by man made hands.

A.  Which artworks make an impact or impression on me? Why?

The artwork that made an impression on me was The Rocks at Pourville, Low Tide made in 1882. This artwork was made by Claude Monet on an Oil canvas. It's kinda hard to describe why it made an impression on me, but when i look at it it just relaxes me and kinda reminds me of my happy place. It's a very calm painting between the waves hitting the rocks and the sun either setting or rising in the background. From far away you wouldn't be able to tell it was on an oil canvas and each detail looks defined.

Another piece of artwork that made an impression on me is by Gustave Caillebotte in 1876. The artwork is called Etude pour  Le Pont de l'Europe. This too was made on an oil canvas. The art work had an impression on me because it personally made me able to put myself in it. For me i pictured myself where the man is looking over the railroad track. I can see myself there just taking in the scene itself or just in my own thoughts. The artist took time to even put in a defined shadow.

B.) Which artworks do I feel a connection with? Why?

The artwork made by Henri- Joseph Harpignies in 1902 called La Rigole a St. Prive. This artwork was made on an oil canvas. I feel a connection with this artwork because it's a type of scenery I have seen before and that i love to just sit back and be with myself. I love the angle the artist picked with the trees being up close and seeing the two houses in the background and a little pond in the middle.

The other artwork i connected with was made in 1884-85 by Georges Seurat. Seurat created this artwork on an oil canvas and named it Etude pour La Grande Jatte. I have a connection with this artwork because back in highschool I had to make it myself. The work that comes with this art piece is very complicated and intriguing how it was made. From far away you would never think it was a bunch of dots made into a beautiful painting.

C.) Which artworks would I like to know more about? Why?

The artwork made in 1943 also by Georges Seurat on an oil canvas was named Etude pour Le Chahut. I would like to know more about this artwork just because I wanna know the background to it and where it would take part at and the mindset behind it.

Paul Gauguin created an art piece on an oil canvas in 1889 called Le Christ jaune. When i went into the part of the Albright Knox where this painting was located the man who took my ticket told me to visit this painting because it was one of his favorites and very interesting to see in person. In the collection I saw at the art gallery none of the paintings were really religious like this one had been. It's a painting that's very bold and powerful. Paul took a time in history and put it on an oil canvas to recreate Jesus on the cross. I would like to know Paul's beliefs in whatever religion he believes in, and if there was a reason he drew this.
